Description: 

This easy climb takes you to dozens of petroglyphs scattered around a rocky hilltop.  The trail zig-zags up a small hill just north of Signal Hill Picnic Area.  The trail is rough and uneven in places and contains rock steps.

The interpretive signs along the trail include:

  • Civilian Conservation Corps (The CCC) - information about the CCC (who built this trail) and their history
  • Prehistoric Rock Art - the art's various designs and possible meanings, and attempts to preserve them
  • Prehistoric People - describes the inhabitants of this region from 10,000 BCE to 1692 CE
  • Historic Period - describes the inhabitants of this region from 1692 CE - present
Directions: 

From Tucson: Travel west on Speedway Boulevard. At the junction of Camino de Oeste, Speedway Boulevard will change names to Gates Pass Road. From this junction, drive 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) west on Gates Pass Road until it ends at Kinney Road (turn right on Kinney Road). Drive 3 miles (5 kilometers) north on Kinney Road to the Park entrance (entrance will be on the right side of the road). This route is not suitable for vehicles over 25 feet in length. Signal Hill Picnic Area is located off Golden Gate Road, 5 miles from the Red Hill Visitor Center.
